Required Documents
- 1 Name & Address of Applicant — individual, company, or firm that will own the registered design
- 2 Representations / Drawings of the Design — minimum 4 to 6 views of the article (front, back, top, bottom, side, perspective) clearly showing the design from all angles. These must be high-quality line drawings or photographs on a white background
- 3 Name of the Article — the specific product to which the design is applied (e.g. "water bottle", "chair", "mobile cover")
- 4 Class of the Article — designs are classified under the Locarno Classification system. We identify the correct class for your product
- 5 Statement of Novelty — a brief statement describing what is new and original about the design. We draft this on your behalf
- 6 Disclaimer (if applicable) — if any part of the design is not being claimed (e.g. a mechanical part), a disclaimer is included
- 7 Power of Attorney — signed by the applicant authorising us to file and follow up on the application on their behalf
- 8 Startup / MSME Certificate — if available, to qualify for the lower government fee of ₹1,000
Step-by-Step Design Registration Process
Design registration in India is relatively faster compared to patents and trademarks. Here is a complete walkthrough of the process.
Design Search
Before filing, we conduct a search in the Indian Design Registry database to check whether an identical or similar design is already registered. This helps assess the chances of registration and avoids potential objections.

We prepare or review your design drawings or photographs to ensure they comply with the Design Office requirements — correct format, white background, all required views, and proper labelling. This is the most important preparatory step.
Filing the Application
We file the design application (Form 1) along with the representations, statement of novelty, and all required documents on the official Design Office portal. Upon successful filing, an application number and filing date are assigned immediately — this is your priority date.

The Design Office examines the application to check for novelty, originality, and compliance with formalities. Unlike patents, design examination is generally quicker. The examination may result in one of two outcomes:

The design is registered and a Registration Certificate is issued. The design is published in the Patent Office Journal.

An examination report is issued with objections. We prepare and file a detailed response addressing each objection on your behalf.
Registration & Certificate Issued
Once registered, you receive an official Design Registration Certificate. You can now use the notation "Registered Design No. XXXXXX" on your product or packaging. The initial registration is valid for 10 years and can be renewed for a further period of 5 years.

Any person may apply to cancel a registered design before the High Court or the Design Office on grounds such as prior publication, lack of novelty, or prior registration. If such a proceeding is initiated against your design, we coordinate with legal counsel to defend your registration.

Renewal of Design Registration
A registered design is initially protected for 10 years from the date of registration. It can be renewed once for a further period of 5 years, making the maximum protection period 15 years.
